# Beyond ERP: What an MES Does for a Garment Factory — and When You Need One

      TL;DR — Direct Answer:
      **ERP plans the business; MES runs the floor.** ERP answers "what should happen and what did it cost" (orders, inventory, costing, payroll). A Manufacturing Execution System answers "what is happening on the line right now" — live WIP, operator performance, quality capture, work dispatching (ISA-95: ERP at level 4, MES at level 3). A factory can run a full ERP and remain completely blind between cutting and packing — that gap is why bottlenecks surface at 5 PM and pay disputes at month-end. Traditional garment MES was priced for large exporters; QR-plus-smartphone systems brought the execution layer down to 20–500 machine CMT economics.



There's a moment many factory owners know: the ERP consultant has finished, the software is live, the reports are beautiful — and at 11 AM on a Tuesday you still cannot answer where lot S-27's sleeve bundles are. The ERP knows the lot's *cost* to the rupee. It has no idea the bundles have been sitting behind the buttonhole station for two hours.


That's not a bad ERP. That's the wrong layer. This post explains the layer most garment software conversations skip — the MES — in factory language, with an honest account of where my own product sits in the split.


## The Two Layers, in Factory Language


Manufacturing IT has a standard reference model (ISA-95) that stacks systems in levels. Two of them matter for a garment factory:

The confusion in garment software marketing comes from vendors using "ERP" for everything. But the distinction predicts exactly what a system can and cannot do for you: an ERP without an execution layer can tell you a lot lost money *after* it shipped — it can never tell you the lot is *currently* stuck, because it has no eyes on the floor.


## What the MES Layer Actually Does on a Sewing Floor


      - **Live WIP tracking** — how many pieces sit at every operation, right now, so [bottlenecks surface in minutes instead of at the evening count](/blog/wip-tracking-garment-factory.html).

      - **Operator performance** — [efficiency, pieces/hour, and NPT per operator](/blog/sewing-operator-productivity-metrics.html), computed continuously rather than reconstructed from tally sheets.

      - **Quality capture at the source** — pass/repair decisions with defect types feeding a [live quality dashboard](/blog/apparel-quality-dashboard.html) instead of a day-old register.

      - **Work dispatching** — which bundle goes to which operator next, with dependency rules (no shoulder-join before the parts exist).

      - **Machine events** — downtime recorded as it interrupts work, feeding both fair pay and [maintenance prioritization](/blog/cmms-machine-maintenance-garment-factory.html).



Notice that every item is *operational*, not financial. That's the tell for which layer you're looking at: MES features have timestamps measured in seconds; ERP features have them measured in documents.


## The Garment MES Landscape — and Why It Skipped Small Factories


Dedicated garment MES products exist and are real: Stitch MES (India), PROTRACKER (Bangladesh), and WiMetrix's RFID-based SooperWizer among them (we compare them in the [production tracking systems guide](/blog/garment-production-tracking-system-2026-guide.html), and vendor-by-vendor in the [Stitch MES](/blog/stitch-mes-alternative-scan-erp.html) and [PROTRACKER](/blog/protracker-alternative-scan-erp-comparison.html) comparisons). They were largely built for large exporters: per-station hardware, RFID infrastructure, implementations measured in months — economics that make sense at 1,000+ machines and never reached the 50-machine CMT unit.


What changed the math is the phone in your operators' pockets: bundle QR labels cost fractions of a cent, ordinary Androids are the scan terminals, and the cloud replaced the server room ([the QR vs RFID cost breakdown](/blog/rfid-vs-qr-code-garment-tracking.html)). The execution layer stopped being an enterprise purchase and became a subscription a 30-machine factory can justify.


## Where Scan ERP Sits in This Split — Honestly

## Do You Need the MES Layer? A 60-Second Self-Test


      - Can you answer where any given lot's bundles are *right now* without phoning a supervisor?

      - Are bottlenecks discovered within the hour — or at the end-of-day count?

      - Is piece-rate pay computed from recorded work — or argued from coupons at month-end?

      - When defects spike, can you attribute them to an operation or machine the same day?



Four yeses: you already have an execution layer, whatever it's called. Two or more nos: you have the gap this article is about — and no amount of ERP reporting will close it, because the reports describe a floor the system cannot see.
