Garment Costing Software: From SMV to CMT Quote Without Spreadsheet Archaeology
Ask any small CMT factory for their costing of a style they quoted eight months ago and you get the same scene: five spreadsheet files named FINAL, final2, and final2-USE-THIS, an SMV column nobody remembers the source of, and a fabric consumption figure typed in before the pattern was even graded. Then the buyer reorders, prices have moved, and someone rebuilds the sheet from scratch. Where Spreadsheets Break
- Version chaos. The costing that won the order and the costing the merchandiser later edited are different files, and six months on nobody can say which numbers the price was built on. A quote is a commitment; a file named final2 is not a record of one.
- Stale SMVs. The SMV column gets copied from the last similar style, which was copied from the one before it. Meanwhile your line has changed machines, operators, and methods. The sheet stays confident; the floor drifts away from it.
- No link to actual production. This is the structural one. After the order runs, your factory produced thousands of data points: what the operations actually took, what the fabric actually consumed. A spreadsheet cannot hear any of it, so the next quote starts from the same guesses.
What Costing Software Should Pull Automatically
The test of garment costing software is not the prettiness of the cost sheet. It is which inputs arrive without a human retyping them:
- SMV/SAM values per operation. Stored against the operation, not against a spreadsheet row, so every style built from those operations inherits the current value. If you are still establishing SMVs, start with the basics in SAM and SMV calculation.
- Measured operation times from scans. If your floor already scans bundles at each operation, the timestamps between an operator's scans are a time study running all day, every day, on your real machines and your real styles. That measured time is what a stale SMV column should be checked against before the next quote goes out.
- Fabric consumption from cutting records. Once a lot is cut, the relationship between fabric issued and pieces produced is a fact, not an estimate. Costing that reads cutting records quotes the next similar style from what the last one actually consumed.

The Honest Boundary: Costing Is Judgement
No software should quote for you, and be suspicious of any that claims to. Whether to take a thin-margin order to keep lines busy through a slow month, how much risk premium an unfamiliar construction deserves, what a long-term buyer's reorder is worth in flexibility — these are owner decisions, and they are the actual skill of costing. The software's job is narrower and more valuable than automation theater: make sure the minutes, the meters, and the trim counts under that judgement are true. A good merchandiser with true inputs beats a great one with stale ones.
